The Chorale was founded in 1972 by Dr. Brazeal Wayne Dennard, a Detroit-based singer, educator, and choral director Wikipedia+1. Dennard, born in 1929 in Detroit, had a lifelong passion for music and a deep connection to African American spirituals, which he heard in church choirs but felt were underrepresented in the broader choral world intersectionalities.mun.ca. Inspired by his membership in the National Association of Negro Musicians, he sought to create an ensemble that would not only perform African American music but also provide opportunities for African Americans to perform with major orchestras and meet conductors and young performers
